Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

Tomokadzuki is a sea apparition from the coast of Shima that appears in exactly the same form as the person diving below. Encounters are said to be most common under an overcast sky. The telltale difference is the unnaturally long end of the double's headcloth. It may hold out an abalone or beckon the diver toward darker water, and accepting the invitation is feared to end in death. Ama divers wore towels and garments marked with a pentagram and lattice design as protection. No single explanation of the apparition is known; alongside stories of a sea ghost, people have also described it as a vision brought on by exhaustion and prolonged work in the water.

Folklore & Legends

In parts of Shima, a lone ama is said to meet another diver dressed exactly like herself. One rule advises accepting whatever the double offers only with the hands held behind the back. Other accounts tell of a mosquito-net-like covering cast over the victim; one diver escaped by cutting through it with her chisel. Some witnesses were so terrified that they could never dive again, and neighboring communities held himachi vigils after an encounter. Kamo District in Shizuoka preserves a related story of an ama who dismissed the warning, dived again, and died. At Antō in Fukui, a backward-headcloth apparition called the umi-ama is said to appear only when someone is working alone. Across these regional forms, solitude, dim water, a familiar double, and the danger of breaking a diver's practiced rhythm recur together.

Detailed Analysis

This form brings together traditions from Shima, Izu, and Echizen in which a diver sees another self in the water. Tomokadzuki duplicates the witness's face, clothing, and equipment. Only the end of its headcloth, hanging much too long behind it, gives the double away. It appears when cloud cover or fading light has dimmed the sea, approaches with an abalone or another shellfish, and then leads the diver toward the darker side of the water. Ama passed down several responses: do not let fear disrupt the sequence of movements, do not reach forward for what the apparition offers, and wear towels or garments bearing protective signs. None was considered infallible. Some stories tell of a netlike shroud falling over the diver. Encounters overwhelmingly occur during solitary work, which is why many communities regarded diving in company as the safest defense. Tomokadzuki can be understood as a revenant that draws people beneath the sea, but explanations based on delirium, fatigue, and hallucination after long periods of diving have also circulated for generations. Whatever its nature, Shima ama marked their clothing and headcloths with the pentagram and lattice known together as Seiman–Dōman. In Antō, the related umi-ama is also said to move contrary to expectation, never allowing the witness a clear view. The legend gives visible form to a diver's most dangerous moment: alone, disoriented, and no longer certain whether the figure in the water is a companion or herself.
