Is it "Maya calendar" or "Mayan calendar"?

Academically, "Maya calendar" is correct. Maya functions as both noun and adjective for the people, culture, and their cultural products — including the calendar. Mayan, strictly speaking, is reserved for the family of Mayan languages. In popular writing the two are often used interchangeably, but anthropologists, museums (e.g. the Smithsonian NMAI), and academic publishers consistently prefer "Maya calendar." YOKAI.JP follows that convention.

Why does the lookup table only cover 1910–2065?

Maya calendar values repeat on a 52-year cycle, so 156 years (= 52 × 3) is enough to cover almost every birth date a present-day reader will need. 1910–2065 spans from the Meiji/Taishō era to mid-21st century and was chosen as the de-facto standard range by Japanese Dreamspell publishers. For dates outside the range, you can extend the table forward or backward by 52-year intervals.

How does the 260-day Tzolk'in cycle actually work?

The Tzolk'in pairs each of 20 day-signs (Sun Seals) with each of 13 numbers (Galactic Tones). Because 20 and 13 are coprime, the pairings don't repeat until 260 days have passed — every combination from KIN 1 to KIN 260 appears once. After day 260 the cycle restarts at KIN 1. The Maya treated this 260-day ring as the sacred rhythm of time itself, and each KIN as a unique field of meaning.

What's the difference between Dreamspell and the traditional Maya calendar?

The traditional Maya calendar is rooted in centuries of astronomical observation — Tzolk'in, Haab', Long Count, lunar series, and more. Dreamspell, formulated by José Argüelles in the late 20th century, is a modern reinterpretation that keeps the 260-day Tzolk'in structure but uses a fixed starting anchor (Gregorian July 26 = day 1 of a new year), a different mythic vocabulary, and a leap-day convention that diverges from the ancient system. This lookup table follows the Dreamspell convention.

What does the asterisk (*) next to certain years mean?

It marks leap years (February has 29 days). For birth dates from March 1 to March 31 of a leap year, you need to add 1 to the value you compute from the table — this is the leap-year correction explained in step 4 of the instructions. For dates in January, February, or April–December of a leap year, no correction is needed.

How accurate is this KIN calculator?

The lookup table reproduces the standard Japanese Dreamspell reference exactly. The anchor used is July 26, 2013 = KIN 164 (Yellow Seed · Tone 8) — the "Galactic Day of Liberation." Results have been cross-checked against multiple Japanese Maya calendar reference books and calculators, with no discrepancies.
