Basic Description

A historical onmyoji (court diviner) of the mid-Heian period recorded in official sources. Trained under the Kamo lineage in astronomy, calendrics, and divination, he performed purifications and ritual steps (heihaku/henbai) at court. Diaries note the trust he gained from Emperors Kazan and Ichijo and from Fujiwara no Michinaga. He later also held the post of Astronomer-in-Chief, paving the way for the Abe (Tsuchimikado) lineage to codify Onmyodo as a hereditary tradition. Over time his legend grew, and he came to embody the archetype of the sorcerer who subdues yokai and commands shikigami.

Folklore & Legends

From the medieval period onward, tale collections and temple-shrine legends depict Seimei commanding shikigami to pacify vengeful spirits and strange apparitions. As a disciple of Kamo no Yasunori, he showed prodigious talent and, through court purifications, was said to avert epidemics and droughts. Tradition places his residence at Tsuchimikado in Kyoto; he divined auspicious directions for bridges and wells to avoid calamity. Historical notes mingle with embellished anecdotes, and he was absorbed into popular belief as the emblematic master of Onmyodo.

Detailed Analysis

A portrait of Abe no Seimei shaped around the historical court onmyoji, later embellished by folklore. He is chiefly depicted as a practitioner of astronomy, calendrics, divination, and purification, presiding over rites such as ritual stamping, ablution, and directional avoidance. Shikigami were originally discussed as doctrinal techniques of Onmyodo or auxiliary spirits, symbolized as secret transmissions within the family line. Prayers for rain and healing from epidemics functioned to stabilize society through knowledge of seasons, stars, and directions combined with public ritual. From early modern times onward, Seimei was elevated as the progenitor of the Tsuchimikado house, and miracle tales multiplied in temple-shrine origin stories and storytelling. Records of a real government official merged with the image of a thaumaturge in yokai tales, fixing his name as representative of Onmyodo.
