Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

A waterside yokai depicted by Edo-period artist Toriyama Sekien in Konjaku Hyakki Shūi. Covered head to toe in hair and armed with file-like teeth, it is shown catching fish along a riverbank. The name also appears as “Kishigai Kozō.” While it evokes kappa-type creatures, equating them requires caution. It is chiefly known as a being that exists within Sekien’s paintings, with few solid mentions in classical texts or regional lore.

Folklore & Legends

Its first attested appearance is in Sekien’s Konjaku Hyakki Shūi, where the caption simply notes it eats fish by the river. No distinct folktale type has been identified. Some have compared it to a Yamaguchi dialect creature called Takiwaro that becomes an enko (kappa) upon entering the sea, but any direct lineage is unclear. Modern reference works typically present it as a yokai originating from art, without local tradition attached.
