Boroboroton

Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

Boroboroton is a tsukumogami: an old, torn futon that gains a spirit after long years of use. It appears in Toriyama Sekien’s Edo-period Hyakki Tsurezurebukuro, where its name plays on boroboro (“tattered”) and possibly a term for mendicant monks. Lacking widespread oral lore, it is largely Sekien’s creation. At night the futon hops about and startles people, more prankster than menace.

Folklore & Legends

No stable folktale types are known in the wild; the primary sources are Sekien’s illustration and note. In his work, worn bedding is shown animated as one of the ‘hundred implements,’ reflecting the idea that aged objects become yokai. Scholars link the name to the word boroboro and to wordplay noted in Essays in Idleness (Tsurezuregusa) section 115, but no specific regional legends are documented.

Detailed Analysis

An image based on Toriyama Sekien’s Hyakki Tsurezure-bukuro. A futon long used and then cast aside rises at night, bounding about the room to startle its former owner. Its malice is mild, acting mainly as a chastening presence that creates a commotion to spur repentance. The name is often read as a play on the tattered fabric’s “boro-boro” and the term for Fuke Zen monks, intertwining beliefs about spirits inhabiting tools with literary wit. Though local folk attestations are scarce, iconographically it is treated as a link in the lineage of tsukumogami tales.
