Nine post-war and Heisei-era urban legends from schoolyards, 2channel and city streets
Lineage of Modern Urban Yokai Tales
Nine representative urban legends of modern Japan, born from post-war schoolyard folklore and Heisei-era 2channel occult forums. Unlike the Edo-period Hyakki Yagyo yokai, these tales come with traceable origins: a known year of first appearance, a known medium, and often a named poster. The lineage runs from Hanako-san of the Toilet (1948, Sawauchi village in Iwate) through the 1970s school-horror boom (Aka-Manto, Teke Teke, Kashima Reiko, Mary's Telephone) to the Heisei-era 2channel net yokai (Kunekune, Yamanoke, Hasshakusama). This is the canonical roster of "modern kaii" as compiled by folklorist Tsuneki Tōru in Gakkō no Kaidan (1990) and by Kihara Hirokatsu and colleagues in Toshi no Ana (2003).
