Basic Description

A yokai depicted by Toriyama Sekien in Konjaku Hyakki Shūi. Countless eyes appear across the paper screen doors of a dilapidated house, staring back at intruders. Sekien’s note suggests a go player’s obsession spread from the board to the entire house, framing it as a haunt residing in the shoji itself. Later encyclopedias call it a literary creation, yet it endures as an emblem of the eerie patterns and dim light cast through shoji screens.

Folklore & Legends

From the Edo period onward, tales across Japan tell of travelers staying in abandoned houses, only to be glared at by rows of eyes on the shoji. Bibliographies from Tōhoku record episodes of eyes appearing on the screens of empty homes, or eyeballs multiplying at night until they fill the room; names vary, with labels like “eyes on the shoji.” Eyewitness-style explanations suggest the lattice intersections of shoji can look like eyes, a visual illusion that may underlie the ghost story.

Detailed Analysis

Reconstructed from Toriyama Sekien’s imagery and captions as a swarm of disembodied eyes gathering on the shoji of a ruined dwelling. Rather than inflicting direct harm, it unsettles by staring. It is mediated by domestic neglect and unappeased sentiments, yet belongs to a generalized lineage of house-haunts not tied to specific individuals or locales. This reading also aligns with later variations in collected names and with links to visual illusion phenomena.
