Tall Woman

Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

A female yokai depicted by Toriyama Sekien in Gazu Hyakki Yagyo. She is known for stretching her lower body up to the height of a building’s second floor to peer through windows. Sekien’s original print includes no notes, so her nature and identity remain uncertain. Later writers imagined her startling patrons on the upper floors of brothels, but historical sources mostly present her as a visual motif without fixed tales or a settled etymology—an emblem of a strange figure that peers from high places.

Folklore & Legends

In Wakayama, later descriptions mention a “Tall Wife” frightening the second floor of brothels, and in the Tohoku region some ghost stories about a woman peering into upstairs windows were titled “Takafemale/Tall Woman.” These are regarded as later reinterpretations and retellings, with little firm local tradition. Readings that link her to satire of Yoshiwara remain interpretive. Common to these accounts is a woman who lengthens her stature at night to look into second-floor windows and startle people.
