Kanatsubute

Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

Kanatsubute is a shapeshifting menace of Narasaka recorded in the Treasure Tales (Hōbutsushū). It hurled small gold pebbles like shot to ambush travelers, behaving more like a bandit than a phantom. In the Otogi-zōshi tale of Tamura, it appears as a gigantic monk, wielding three gold stones—Tarō, Jirō, and Saburō—to smash people, horses, and pack trains. The warrior Inase Gorō Sakanoue Toshimune eventually subdued it; Kanatsubute surrendered and was executed. Its hallmark is the uncanny skill with golden gravel and its reign of terror on the Narasaka pass.

Folklore & Legends

In the late Heian period, the Hōbutsushū notes that the Narasaka Kanatsubute was captured and executed. Later sources such as Tamura no Sōshi depict a monk-like giant, about two jō tall, loosing three kinds of gold pebbles and seizing tribute bound for the capital. By imperial order, Sakanoue Toshimune hunted it down. Toshimune deftly deflected the flying stones and pursued the creature for seven days and nights, using a numinous whistling arrow, until it surrendered. After capture, it was inspected in the capital and beheaded at Mount Funaoka, its head put on display.
