Basic Description

Konpeika is the ogre chieftain who haunted the seacoast of Kumano in old Kii Province. From his lair—an ogre’s cavern in the cliffs of Onigajō—he led hordes of demons that plagued ships and shores. He appears in legends of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro’s demon-slaying in Kumano, where an arrow blessed by Kannon pierced his left eye and felled him. Some sources equate him with the pirate leader Tagamaru, though details vary by region and text.

Folklore & Legends

Konpeika barricaded himself in the ogre’s cave at Onigajō, reachable only when the sea lay calm. When Tamuramaro’s assault stalled, a divine boy appeared on an offshore islet and urged the troops to dance. As the soldiers lined up their boats and danced, the stone door of the cave opened; Konpeika peered out, and Tamuramaro shot his left eye with a consecrated bow. The ogres rushed forth but fell to his arrows. The boy revealed himself as an avatar of Thousand-Armed Kannon and vanished in radiant light, and the islet came to be called Mami-ga-shima (“Demon-Watcher Island”). Konpeika’s severed head was buried to quell its curse.

Detailed Analysis

A compiled variant portraying the ogre-general aspect of Kanekira Shika within Tamuramaro-style oni-slaying tales along the Kumanonada coast. He is said to have ruled from the ogres’ sea-eroded cavern known as the Demon’s Rock Dwelling, commanding a band of oni to disrupt maritime routes. In the clash with Tamuramaro, he feared Kannon’s protection, tightened his wards, and barred the stone door to endure a siege. Entranced by the dance led by a child avatar of Senju Kannon, he peered through the doorway and was fatally shot in the left eye. After his defeat, the head was buried in a ravine and ritually pacified. Local lore sometimes names him the pirate chief Tagamaru, with traces preserved in temple-shrine origin tales and toponyms such as Mamigashima, Tomari Kannon (Seimizu-dera), Ōma Shrine, and Onimoto. Historicity is uncertain; some see memories of suppressing revolts or local powers in Kumano later recast into Tamuramaro legend, yet all survive as narrative tradition.
