Saru-oni (Ape Ogre)

Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

Saru-oni is an ogre from the Noto region that resembles a monkey and bears a single horn on its head. It was said to dwell in a rocky cave behind Iwaido Shrine in Yanagida (now Noto Town) and to trouble nearby villages. The local tutelary deity shot and slew it with an arrow; the spot where the arrow struck its eye became known as Atome, and the stream of its black blood formed the river called Kurokawa. Iyahime Shrine on Notojima preserves a relic said to be the saru-oni’s horn.

Folklore & Legends

The saru-oni plagued the villages around Yanagida, emerging nightly from a cave it used as a lair. At the villagers’ plea, the tutelary deity took up bow and arrows to hunt it down. One shaft pierced the creature’s eye; the place of impact became Atome, and the black blood that poured from the fallen ogre flowed into what is now called the Kurokawa. The severed horn was handed down at Iyahime Shrine on Notojima, and Iwaido Shrine is said to have been dedicated to pacify the saru-oni’s spirit.

Detailed Analysis

Based on the Noto region’s distinctive image of the saru-oni. It has an ape-like body crowned with a single horn and dwells in rock caves, menacing livestock and people near settlements. It appears under cover of night and is feared as a boundary breaker between the mountains and the village. Communities sought the protection of local tutelary deities, and tales of subjugation by bow and arrow are tied to place-name origins. After its defeat, its horn is said to have been enshrined, and memorial shrines were established, pairing awe with appeasement. The saru-oni is told as a singular creature rather than a pack. Its range centers on cave mouths and the satoyama borderlands, its presence marked by a bestial stench and legends of black blood.
