Basic Description

“Sandworm” is a catch‑all term for gigantic, wormlike monsters that tunnel beneath sandy ground or dunes. It is not a settled figure in classical Japanese yokai lore. In modern fiction and imaginary tales, they are widely depicted as burrowing through sand, sensing vibrations or scent, and swallowing prey whole. The name comes from English; while it overlaps with the zoological sense of “sand worm,” in a yokai context it is understood as a subterranean monster.

Folklore & Legends

Clear native Japanese traditions are scarce, and there is no direct match in standard oral tale types. From the modern era onward, the name and image spread through translated literature and popular entertainment, where the idea of a monster lurking in sand took root. In domestic accounts of the uncanny, “things dwelling underground” are sometimes compared to concepts like the earth-dragon (doryo) or earth-bugs, but no specific folktale title or local term has been firmly identified.
