The Giant Centipede is a monstrous centipede yokai whose carapace is so hard it deflects blades and arrows. Its body is long enough to coil around mountains, its many legs glow a fiery red, and its venomous fangs were said to bite through armor. It is portrayed as an adversary of great serpents and dragons—water deities—with whom it battles in lakes, marshes, and the wilds. Centipedes symbolized fearless resolve and were seen as auspicious by warriors and merchants, though details of this creature vary widely by region.

A famous tale from Ōmi tells of the Giant Centipede that appeared on Mount Mikami and menaced the dragon clans of Lake Biwa. Guided by a great serpent at the Seta Karahashi Bridge, the hero Tawara Tōda (Fujiwara no Hidesato) confronted it. His blades and arrows failed at first, but he smeared his arrow with saliva, prayed to Hachiman, and shot the monster dead. In return, he received inexhaustible treasures such as an ever-full rice bale. In Shimotsuke, a parallel legend pits the serpent god of Mount Nantai against the centipede god of Mount Akagi, with the poet Sarumaru Dayū taking sides—often treated as a variant. The use of saliva as a slaying charm is linked to onmyōdō practices of apotropaic taboo and magic.
A famed form tied to legends of Mount Mikami in Ōmi and the shores of Lake Biwa. Said to coil around the mountain seven and a half times, its shell is as hard as metal or stone, impervious to arrows and blades. At night its legs gleam crimson, casting a long shadow over the lake and mountain skirts. Tales of its slaying are linked to martial valor and understood in relation to dragon-god worship and the numinous power of bridges. Connections to mining and blacksmith lore have been noted, though details remain unclear.
