Basic Description

The child of Ninigi-no-Mikoto and Konohanasakuya-hime, also known as Amatsuhikohikohohodemi-no-Mikoto. Protagonist in the Umisachi-Yamasachi myth. After losing his brother's fishhook, Shiotsuchi-no-Kami guided him to the sea palace, where he married Toyotamahime. He returned with the tide-controlling jewels, which he used to subjugate his brother. As the grandfather of Emperor Jimmu, he is an important ancestor of the imperial lineage. Enshrined at Udo Shrine, Aoshima Shrine, and Kagoshima Shrine.

Folklore & Legends

Yamasachihiko's true identity is Amatsuhikohikohohodemi-no-Mikoto (also known as Hoori). The core of his story is the Umisachi-Yamasachi Myth. After losing his brother's fishhook, he was guided by Shiotsuchi-no-Kami to the sea palace. There, he married Toyotamahime. Upon returning, he used the Tide-Flowing and Tide-Ebbing jewels to subjugate his brother, which became the origin myth of the Hayato subjugation. Because he broke the taboo of looking at Toyotamahime's true form, she returned to the sea, leaving behind the child who became the father of Emperor Jimmu. He is enshrined at Udo Shrine.

This cluster bundles the seven deities forming the grandparents and great-grandparents of the first Emperor Jimmu, structuring the 'imperial-lineage genesis layer' that bridges the first half of Kiki mythology (creation, land-yielding) and the second half (Jimmu's eastern expedition).
