An old witch-like yokai who dwells deep in the mountains. She is also known as the foster mother of the folk hero Kintaro.
A master of mountain lore, Yamauba sometimes aids travelers with guidance or shelter, but in other tales lures them to eat them. Her nature shifts between guardian and predator, reflecting the mountains’ peril and bounty.
