Ikijama (Living Jinx)

Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

Ikijama is an Okinawan term for a malevolent living spirit. It refers to a soul that slips out of a living person consumed by resentment or jealousy and afflicts its target with illness or misfortune. Possession is said to be transmitted through gifts; receiving items like banana plant (bashō), garlic, or Chinese scallion (rakkyo) could bring on mysterious sickness. The sorcery that sends such a spirit, as well as its practitioners and lineages, are also called Ikijama. Exorcism is traditionally performed by yuta (Okinawan shamans).

Folklore & Legends

Ikijama may appear in the exact likeness of its living source and is said to ride along with gifted produce to possess the recipient. In some locales, a ritual uses a doll called the “Ikijama Buddha,” over which the sender chants the name of the body part they wish to sicken. Victims suffer headaches and wasting, and a yuta returns the spirit with gestures such as binding the thumb or miming the driving of nails. Livestock and crops can also be affected, and the power is rumored to pass through the female line. Records from the early modern period note punishments for those suspected of practicing such arts.

Detailed Analysis

A strand of Okinawan beliefs about living spirits. When hatred or envy swells, a person’s spirit may slip out while retaining their form and afflict the target with illness or malaise. Reports describe several modes: possession via gifts, attachment through a curse-doll known as the Nama-Jama Buddha, and even obsession achieved by will alone. Harm was said to strike not only people but also livestock and fields. Communities responded with yuta prayers, apotropaic fouling, and even driving it off through scolding and insults. Some accounts say the lineage passes matrilineally, leading to recorded cases of avoided marriages. Early modern records note accusations, lawsuits, and punishments for alleged use.
