Akaei

Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

Akaei is a colossal ray recorded as Akaei no Uo, the 'red ray fish,' in the late Edo-period collection Ehon Hyaku Monogatari (1841). Sand accumulates on its back as it floats at the surface, making the creature large enough to be mistaken for an island. Sailors who approach or step ashore find it suddenly sinking beneath them, raising heavy seas that break ships and swallow people. The tale overlaps with mirages and castaway stories, and treats such uncanny encounters as anything but rare on the open ocean.

Folklore & Legends

A boat in distress off Nojimazaki in Awa Province made for a nearby 'island,' and its crew went ashore. There were no houses; seaweed tangled in the vegetation, and the water in its pools tasted of salt. After the sailors returned to their boat and pulled away, the entire 'island' sank into the sea. They had landed on the back of a giant Akaei. It was said to submerge as ships drew near, raising waves that smashed their hulls. Related tales describe castaways mistaking the back of an enormous ray for land, as well as giant fish seen in the waters off Ezo.

Detailed Analysis

The Akaei of Ehon Hyaku Monogatari exposes an island-sized body above the water. Sand, pebbles, and seaweed rest on its back, so from a distance it looks like an uninhabited island. When sailors draw alongside, the creature sinks. The sudden descent creates whirlpools and rough water strong enough to damage or overturn a ship. The story warns that what seems solid on the open sea may not be land at all. Centered on an encounter off Awa, it is told beside reports of giant fish near Ezo and other variants, including one called Akaei no Kyō. The old accounts say little about Akaei's ecology. Three features remain constant: its extraordinary size, its movement between surface and depth, and the dangerous waves produced when it disappears. Natural history and ghost story meet in the image of a vast shape that no sailor can safely identify from afar.
