Phantom Locomotive

Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

The Phantom Locomotive is a modern-era yokai tale from the age of steam, in which a train that does not exist appears on the tracks, rushes forward, and vanishes at the last moment. Many accounts explain it as a fox, tanuki, or especially a mujina (badger) transforming into a train to mislead people. After the disappearance, the body of a run-over animal is often found beside the line. The belief reflects a folk interpretation that the novel whistles and rattle of night trains in the hills were the work of shape-shifting beasts.

Folklore & Legends

In the Meiji era along the Jōban Line, crews reported another train bearing down on their night service, only to blink out just before impact. One engineer, convinced it was a phantom, held speed; a sharp cry—“Gya!”—was heard, and the apparition vanished. At dawn a badger’s corpse was found by the track, and a memorial mound was raised at Kenseiji in Kameari. In Matsuyama, Iyo Province, tales say a tanuki connected to Shinonome Shrine transformed into a locomotive, a story noted by local men of letters. Such accounts recast unfamiliar sights and sounds of railways as the shapeshifting tricks of beasts.
