Basic Description

A house-dwelling yokai depicted by Toriyama Sekien in Konjaku Gazu Zoku Hyakki: an ugly old woman with disheveled hair hanging upside down from the ceiling. She appears late at night, startling people but generally causing no direct harm. Some see her as a liminal being moving through the boundary of the ceiling; others view her as Sekien’s wordplay, riffing on the period phrase “to show the ceiling.”

Folklore & Legends

Considered an imaginal apparition grounded in pictorial sources. Edo ghost-story collections include tales of attic-dwelling disturbances that trouble travelers, sharing the motif of emergence from the ceiling. In Yamanashi, folklore records a harmless nocturnal presence called “ten-zurushi” that descends from above; it is often associated with this yokai, though sources differ on its origins and nature.

Detailed Analysis

An interpretation grounded in Toriyama Sekien’s iconic prototype. The house ceiling marks a boundary between inside and outside, the mundane and the otherworld; its upside‑down descent symbolizes an inversion of that threshold. It appears mostly at midnight when human activity has stilled, and is said to cause visual shock without actual harm. Early modern readers linked it to wordplay and household safety, reading it as an allegory that quietly warns of neglect, filth, and hazards in the crawlspace above. Later traditions reinterpreted creaks, drafts, and animal sounds in the ceiling as this apparition, placing it within the broader lineage of domestic yokai.
