Escorting Sparrow

Escorting Sparrow

Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

A mysterious bird said to follow travelers along mountain paths at night, chirping “chichichichi…” and sometimes drawn to lantern light. Its call was feared as a harbinger of wolves or the yokai known as the “escorting wolf.” Though described as sparrow-like, few claim to have seen it clearly. Some call it “Aoji” due to its call resembling the Eurasian siskin/black-faced bunting, but others doubt the identification since this creature flies at night. In some regions it is even said to be a rabbit.

Folklore & Legends

In Wakayama, especially around Mount Myoho, hearing its call on a night road meant wolves might appear, so people watched their footing to avoid stumbling. In Nara, it is sometimes equated with the night sparrow and said to draw near when a lantern is lit. While often described as a bird, eyewitness accounts are scarce; traditions also interpret it as a wild pheasant or small animal, and these explanations coexist within local lore.

Detailed Analysis

Okuri-suzume has been framed as a harbinger and ill omen warning of dangers on mountain roads. Its calls precede, and are said to lead into, appearances of wolves or the escorting wolf, forming a narrative that encourages careful footing and avoiding delays in the wilds. The name “kuzusuzume” aligned with the real bird Black-faced Bunting (Aoji) is recorded, though its supposed nocturnality is debated. Sightings of its form are scarce, leaving its appearance unsettled, and in parts of Nara it is conflated with the night sparrow. Stories place it around Myohosan in Wakayama, and it is said to draw near lantern light. More than a threat itself, the lore centers on its “foreboding call,” giving it a strong character as a sound-based apparition.
