Kamikki is a hair-born yokai depicted by Toriyama Sekien in Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro. It is said to arise when a woman’s grudges or jealousy permeate her hair, granting it will and turning it monstrous. The hair extends on its own, bristles, and writhes like oni horns. Even if cut, it grows without end, reflecting beliefs about the spiritual potency and impurity associated with hair. Sekien likely visualized long-standing taboos and magical notions surrounding hair.
Folklore & Legends
Across Japan, human hair has been used in spells and prayers, and people were warned never to treat locks of hair or keepsakes of the dead carelessly. Tales tell of hair that grows by itself, or vengeful strands that harm their former owner—motifs that also echo tsukumogami stories of animated combs and sidelocks. Sekien’s image distills these ideas into hair itself becoming a yokai. No specific local place or named figures are firmly attested.

An iconographic reading of the Hair Demon as depicted in Toriyama Sekien’s Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro. A woman’s hair, infused with its owner’s passions, becomes autonomous, standing on end at midnight as its locks extend and contract like living things. Cutting it offers only brief respite, for it regrows and multiplies at once. Rooted in a dual folk view that both sanctifies and shuns hair, it is shown as a being where tsukumogami traits cross with vengeful-spirit nature. Its body is a mass of hair without face or limbs, asserting menace through motion and shifting length. Memorial offerings and proper hair-cutting rites are said to calm it, yet no certain banishment method is recorded.
