Paper Dance

Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

Paper Dance is a yokai name given to a phenomenon where scraps of paper lift and drift through the air on their own. In the early Showa era, Fujisawa Eihiko’s Illustrated Anthology of Yokai (Japan, Vol. 1) notes it appears in the tenth month (Kannazuki) and uses an illustration of the nose-paper apparition from Inō Mononoke Roku. Later handbooks treated it as a proper-named yokai, but folklorist Kenji Murakami frames it as a recurring incident within ghost tales rather than a distinct entity.

Folklore & Legends

In Inō Mononoke Roku, nose paper in the home of Inō Heitarō rises and dances by itself, one of many strange happenings. Fujisawa presented it as an October oddity, though the picture scroll places the event in the seventh month. Late Showa-era guides expanded the label to tales of IOUs from the Tenpō era or manuscript pages flying away; Murakami notes these likely involve creative embellishment, and there is no clear, localized tradition or fixed pattern for the phenomenon.

Detailed Analysis

Rather than an independent entity, Kamimai is a later整理 as a label for a household anomaly in which paper moves and scatters on its own. Fujisawa Eihiko is cited as authority and places its appearance in the tenth lunar month, yet his illustration reuses a scene from Ino Mononoke Roku, and the original source does not limit it to any particular month. Since the Showa era, folklore and ghost-story collections have introduced cases of contracts or manuscripts lifting and swirling, naming them “Kamimai,” but firsthand credibility and regional distribution remain unconfirmed. Accordingly, this entry treats Kamimai as a generic yokai image signifying inexplicable motions tied to dwellings and objects, specifically the self-propulsion or levitation of paper, with no fixed form or clear place of origin. In lore it rarely harms people or livestock, tending instead toward startling or teasing behavior.
