Hidden Hamlet refers to a secluded settlement or boundary realm concealed in mountain valleys, scarcely visible to ordinary eyes, and treated as a yokai-like presence in art. In Toriyama Sekien’s Konjaku Hyakki Shūi, a shop-curtain reading “Hidden Village” hangs, with lucky mice and koban coins arranged around it. When a person’s ties to the human world thin, this place appears without warning—sometimes bestowing wealth or food, sometimes vanishing without a trace—embodying the idea of a liminal, protective barrier.

Across Japan, tales tell of wanderers who stray into a Hidden Hamlet in the mountains and are lavishly welcomed, only for the path to close once they depart. Souvenirs brought back often turn into leaves or stones by morning, while modest, restrained guests may enjoy lasting good fortune. The motif also echoes stories where mice bring treasure up from the earth, known as “Mouse Paradise” (nezumi jōdo).
An interpretation based on Toriyama Sekien’s Konjaku Hyakki Shūi entry “Kakurezato” (Hidden Village). The mouse and koban coins at the lower right recall tales in which subterranean mice carry wealth (the so‑called Nezumi Jōdo legend), hinting at ties between the village and chthonic or underworld realms. The shop curtain reads “Kakurezato,” expressing a boundary that opens suddenly as an extension of the everyday. The Hidden Village is not a single yokai but a boundary acting as if it has will, repeating wayfinding confusion, temporal slippage, the granting of fortune, and cycles of manifestation and disappearance. Outcomes swing with a visitor’s conduct and greed, from generous hospitality to wealth turning into leaf-litter, resonating with mountain otherworld tales and views of the beyond.
