Basic Description

The Bunagaya is a spirit said to dwell in the forests of Yanbaru in the northern part of Okinawa Island, often described as a semi-naked child with red hair. It is widely considered to belong to the same lineage as the [[yokai:kijimuna]], but while the Kijimuna is a tree spirit that resides within old banyan (gajumaru) trees, the Bunagaya is characterized as a spirit dwelling in the forests and rivers themselves. It is particularly known for manipulating fire (Bunagaya fire), and the mysterious lights that appear like lanterns in the mountains at night were thought to be the work of the Bunagaya. Although it shares traits with the Kijimuna—such as bewitching humans, loving sumo wrestling, catching fish, and cursing those who damage trees—its activities are strongly tied to the deep forests and mountain streams of Yanbaru.

Folklore & Legends

In Yanbaru, it is said there was a custom akin to a test of courage called *arami*, where people would go to watch the Bunagaya fires coming down from the mountains. Ogimi Village promotes itself as the "Village of the Bunagaya," using the spirit's red-haired, semi-naked figure as a village mascot for regional revitalization. The [[yokai:kijimuna]] (from Kijoka and other areas), the Bunagaya, and the Kenmun of Amami (present-day Kagoshima Prefecture) all share common traits: they are "little ones living in trees and forests" who "love fish and sumo wrestling, and curse those who cut down trees." They are spoken of as a lineage of ancestral spirits connected within the Kuroshio culture sphere. However, the Bunagaya maintains its own distinct identity through its deep roots in the specific forests of Yanbaru and its ability to manipulate fire.

Detailed Analysis

The Bunagaya is a red-haired spirit dwelling in the deep forests and mountain streams of Yanbaru. Appearing as a semi-naked child, it lights fires (Bunagaya fire) in the mountains at night, and people would once test their courage by going to view these flames in a custom known as *arami*. While closely related to the [[yokai:kijimuna]], which resides within ancient trees, the Bunagaya is distinguished by being a master of the forests and rivers themselves, as well as by its ability to manipulate fire. It loves sumo and catching fish, and although it is known to trick humans, it readily curses those who harm its trees. Today, Ogimi Village embraces this red-haired spirit as the symbol of the "Village of the Bunagaya."
