The Zan is a mermaid-like sacred beast said to inhabit the waters of the Ryukyu Arc, also known in local dialects as the Zanu or Zano. Its true identity is believed to be the dugong, a real marine mammal that has long been revered as a messenger of the gods in the waters spanning from Yaeyama to Amami. It is often described as having the beautiful upper body of a woman and the lower body of a fish. It is gentle by nature and never brings harm to humans. Folklore tells that if it gets caught in a fisherman's net, it will weep tears and beg for its life; if released, it repays the kindness by warning its savior of impending oceanic disasters. Rather than being a wrathful monster, the Zan stands firmly as a guardian of the sea, deeply defined by its role in saving human lives and forecasting calamity.

In the village of Nosoko on Ishigaki Island, there is a tale of a fisherman who accidentally caught a Zan. The creature wept large tears, desperately pleading for its life. Moved by pity, the fisherman released it back into the ocean. To repay his kindness, the Zan warned him, "A great tsunami will arrive shortly. Flee to the mountains immediately." The people of Nosoko believed this warning, evacuated to the high mountains, and were saved. In contrast, a neighboring village dismissed the warning as nonsense and was completely wiped out by the ensuing wave. This story has been passed down through generations, often linked to the catastrophic Yaeyama Tsunami of 1771. On a historical note, it is a recorded fact that dugongs were considered sacred messengers of the gods in the Ryukyu Kingdom. Their meat was believed to be an elixir of longevity, and whenever one was caught, it was presented as a tribute to the Ryukyuan King. The Zan is the crystalline embodiment of the islanders' intertwined reverence for and fear of the sea's boundless power.
