Zan is a mermaid-like sacred creature said to inhabit the seas of the Ryukyu Arc. In local speech it is also called Zanu or Zano. The figure is generally understood to have grown from encounters with the dugong, a real marine mammal long revered as a messenger of the gods from Yaeyama to Amami. Some descriptions give Zan the beautiful upper body of a woman and the lower body of a fish. It is gentle and does not seek to harm people. When caught in a fisher's net, it weeps and pleads for its life; if released, it repays that mercy by warning its rescuer of danger at sea. Zan is not a raging monster but a guardian that stands on the side of life, giving human beings time to escape a disaster they cannot yet see.
Folklore & Legends
A tale from Nosoko on Ishigaki Island tells of a fisher who caught a Zan in his net. The creature shed great tears and begged to be spared. Moved by pity, he returned it to the sea, whereupon Zan warned him that a great tsunami would soon come and told the villagers to flee to the mountains. The people of Nosoko believed the warning and reached high ground, while a neighboring village that dismissed it was overwhelmed by the wave. The story is often connected with the Yaeyama tsunami of 1771, although the relationship between the legend and that particular historical disaster should be treated with care.
The dugong's sacred place in Ryukyuan belief has a longer historical basis. Its flesh was once credited with extending life, and a captured animal might be presented to the Ryukyuan court. The sea offered food and passage but could also destroy a settlement without warning. Gratitude for its bounty and fear of its power meet in Zan, a creature that remembers mercy and turns knowledge of the sea into a gift of survival.
This form draws on the Nosoko story in which a fisher finds Zan in his net. The mermaid-like creature weeps and begs for its life. When the fisher releases it, Zan answers that mercy with a warning of an approaching tsunami, allowing the villagers who believe it to escape to the mountains.
Zan is generally understood as a folkloric image of the dugong. Dugongs were long regarded in Ryukyuan waters as messengers of the gods: familiar animals of the shallows, yet beings approached with awe. Zan does not cause the disaster it predicts. It senses danger before human beings can and stands between sea and land to preserve life.
Yonatama, another island spirit associated with a tsunami warning, brings the wave in anger after being roasted. Zan takes the opposite role. Together they reveal two moral faces of the sea: cruelty toward a marine creature may call forth vengeance, while mercy may be repaid with rescue. Zan remains one of the Ryukyuan sea's gentlest prophets because its power rests not on punishment, but on gratitude.
