King of the Waterfall Spirit

Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

A name found in the Edo-period artist Toriyama Sekien’s Konjaku Hyakki Shūi, depicting the aspect of Fudō Myōō manifesting within a waterfall. Sekien annotated it as “appearing from plunge pools across the provinces,” citing the Qinglong shu to state it “subdues all demons and obstacles.” Rather than a yokai proper, it is regarded as a visual emblem of Myōō worship manifesting at waterfalls; the title itself appears to be Sekien’s coinage. Detailed tradition is scarce, and regional aliases or concrete cases are unknown.

Folklore & Legends

At Katsuragawa Sokushō Myōō-in in Shiga, a legend tells that the monk Sōō carved a statue of Fudō Myōō from sacred wood obtained from a waterfall’s basin. Such beliefs linking waterfalls and the Myōō are widespread in Shugendō and Tendai circles, with tales across Japan describing waterfalls as sacred sites where the deity descends. Sekien’s image is understood as a visualization of these waterfall-deity epiphanies, showing a figure emerging from the plunge pool to subdue evil, though no specific oral tale is attached to it.
