Suiton

Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

*Suiton* is a one-legged yokai passed down in the Hiruzen Highlands (present-day Hiruzen, Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture), which straddles the northern border of Mimasaka Province and Tottori. The name is said to come from the way it flies in from nowhere with a "*sui*" (whoosh) sound, and lands on its one leg with a "*ton*" (thud) [1]. It is said to have the power to read human minds, appearing only before those harboring evil thoughts to tear them apart and devour them. As a punisher who does no harm to the good, the warning that "the *Suiton* will get you" is said to be the reason why there have historically been no wicked people in Hiruzen [2]. It is a dual-natured being: a mind-reading yokai akin to the *Satori*, but also a local guardian deity who targets only the wicked.

Folklore & Legends

The *Yatsuka-son Shi* (History of Yatsuka Village), which records the folklore of the Hiruzen region, contains a story about the *Suiton* [1]. One winter day, a villager who had come to gather firewood was warming himself by a bonfire when a *Suiton* appeared. Although it read the villager's intention to flee and threatened him, it was startled by the "pop!" of a piece of bamboo bursting in the fire. Believing that "I cannot match a human who commands thunderous sounds," it fled in a panic [1]. This anecdote reveals an unexpected side to this supernatural monster: while it can read minds, it is vulnerable to unexpected noises.

Today, monuments depicting the *Suiton* stand throughout the Hiruzen Highlands, where it is affectionately regarded as a local yokai watching over the land [2]. Its hopping on one leg resonates with other one-legged monsters (such as the *Ippon-datara* or mountain ogres) passed down in mountains across the country, suggesting a background rooted in the deep mountains of the Chugoku region, which people penetrated for ironmaking and hunting.

Detailed Analysis

*Suiton* is a one-legged yokai unique to the Hiruzen Highlands, based on local folklore recorded in the *Yatsuka-son Shi*. Its name derives from the way it flies in with a "*sui*" and lands on its single leg with a "*ton*". It belongs to the lineage of mind-reading yokai like the *Satori*, reading human hearts to tear apart and devour only the wicked. On the other hand, it has functioned as a moral guardian of the land, protecting the good and keeping the evil away. The anecdote of it fleeing in terror from the sound of bamboo bursting in a fire adds a touch of comedy—showing that despite its powerful mind-reading ability, it is easily frightened by sudden noises. This perfectly illustrates its character as a local yokai that serves as both a warning and a beloved figure. Today, statues of the *Suiton* are erected in various places as a symbol of Hiruzen tourism.
