Five-Limbed Face

Their soul is listening — speak, and they will answer.

Basic Description

Five-Limbed Face is a yokai depicted in Edo-period picture scrolls as a head from which the arms and legs extend directly. It appears in works like Hyakki Yagyō Emaki and Hyakumonogatari Kaie Emaki, but its name and notes vary, leaving details uncertain. In Bakemono Tsukushi-chō, a similarly shaped figure is labeled “Person from Shitaguni.” “Gotai” is understood as the head plus two arms and two legs, suggesting the creature is a study in anatomical strangeness for its own sake.

Folklore & Legends

There is no reliable oral tradition; it survives mainly as a pictorial type in emaki. Some images show it crab-legged, shuffling sideways, hinting at wordplay or satirical intent. Later writers linked it to puns on “taimen” (face, appearance) or straying from the main point, but the original meaning is unknown. Its name and form were simply passed down across various scrolls.

Detailed Analysis

A version based on the recurring grotesque motif in Edo-period yokai picture scrolls: a head with limbs attached directly to it. Many sources lack captions, and names vary, such as “Gotaimen” and “People of the Lower Country.” The figure often stands bowlegged and sidesteps, heightening visual dissonance and comic effect. Folklorists debate whether such visual oddities caricature social decorum and misalignment, yet no direct oral tradition is recorded. This version prioritizes the repetition of the image and the spread of names, avoids attaching behavior or powers, and limits the setting to generic outdoor scenes. Later studies and commentaries are consulted, but attributes beyond primary sources are not added.
