Basic Description

Daija is a general term for giant, divinely imbued serpents, feared and revered across the land as masters of mountains, lakes, and marshes, and as water gods. The epic tale of a divine battle passed down in Senjogahara, Oku-Nikko, is particularly notable. It tells of the god of Shimotsuke Province's Mount Nantai (Futarasan) taking the form of a Daija to fight a giant centipede—the avatar of the god of Kozuke Province's Mount Akagi—over dominion of the beautiful Lake Chuzenji. Serpents symbolize water and rebirth; their immortality, demonstrated by shedding their skin, and the sacred nature of their coiled forms have drawn ancient veneration as avatars of water deities connected to dragons. The concept of mountain gods taking serpentine forms is widespread throughout Japan, with the Daija of Senjogahara being a prime example.

Folklore & Legends

Many place names in Oku-Nikko are said to preserve the memory of this divine battle. Initially, the god of Mount Nantai (the Daija) was at a disadvantage, but it is said that he repelled the giant centipede with the assistance of the master archer Sarumaru (Ono no Sarumaru). Legend has it that the moor where the gods fought became "Senjogahara" (Moor of the Battlefield), the land dyed red by their flowing blood became "Akanuma" (Red Bog), the shore where they made peace became "Shobugahama" (Shore of Iris / Shore of the Match), and the place where a victory song was sung became "Utagahama" (Shore of Song). Bound up with the Futarasan faith that venerates Mount Nantai as its object of worship and the Fudaraku faith of Mount Nikko, the Daija retains its divinity as the master of the sacred mountain, not merely a monstrous snake. The composition of the confrontation between the serpent (water god) and the centipede (mountain and mine god) resonates with the legend of Tawara Toda vanquishing the giant centipede at Mount Mikami in Omi Province. This creates an East-West contrast involving centipedes, where a serpent defeats it in the eastern provinces, while a human does so in Omi.

Detailed Analysis

The Daija of Senjogahara is the avatar taken by the god of Mount Nantai (Futarasan) to fight for dominion over the lake. When uncoiled, it is long and massive enough to cover half of Lake Chuzenji. Its scales shine like wet obsidian, and its eyes harbor the phosphorescent glow of the lake bottom. It summons water, raises fog, and stirs waves upon the lake's surface to hinder its foes. Initially pressed hard by the giant centipede of Mount Akagi, it is said to have turned the tide by borrowing an arrow from a human master archer—preserving a form of worship where mountain and village intersect, showing a god winning through human assistance. The traces of this victory and defeat became the place names Akanuma, Shobugahama, and Senjogahara, which are etched into the landscape of Oku-Nikko to this day.
