Kataashi-pinza

Kataashi-pinza

Basic Description

The Kataashi-pinza is a type of *majimun* (an Okinawan folkloric spirit or monster) native to Miyako Island, taking the form of a goat with only a single hind leg. The word "pinza" means "goat" in the local Miyako dialect. According to legend, it appears at deserted crossroads (*yumata*) late at night. As it approaches, its front hooves strike the ground with a sharp "gan" sound, while its solitary hind leg drags along with a grinding "guri-guri" noise. Suddenly, it lets out a terrifying shriek and leaps clean over the head of whoever happens to be passing by. It is deeply feared by the islanders, as anyone who is jumped over by the creature will have their *mabui* (soul) snatched away, leaving them bereft of their senses or even dead.

Folklore & Legends

Even today, there is a real intersection in the Shimozato district of Miyakojima City known as "Ganguri-yumata." It is said that this was the very crossroads where the Kataashi-pinza would appear, and the name itself was derived from the "gan-guri" rhythm of its footsteps. In Okinawan folklore, it is a strict taboo to let a *majimun* pass between your legs or leap over your head, as this allows them to steal your soul. The Kataashi-pinza is inextricably tied to this belief. A long-standing warning dictates that if you encounter the creature at night, you must immediately crouch low to the ground so that it cannot possibly leap over you. Various theories exist as to why it only has one hind leg. Some say it is the vengeful spirit of a goat abused by humans, others claim it was a goat raised for meat that escaped and transformed into a monster, while another story suggests it simply botched a landing during a jump and lost its leg. Regardless of its origins, the Kataashi-pinza remains a uniquely Miyakoan *majimun*, its legend deeply woven into the daily life and landscape of the island.

Detailed Analysis

A one-legged goat *majimun* that haunts the Ganguri-yumata intersection in Shimozato. Standing on its solitary hind leg, it glides out of the darkness into deserted crossroads, its hard hooves ringing out with a rhythmic "gan, guri-guri" sound. Once it spots a passerby, it unleashes an ear-splitting shriek that tears through the night and leaps over their head like an arrow, snatching their *mabui* (soul) in the process. However, it cannot harm those who quickly crouch down to avoid being jumped over; defeated, it leaves only its scream and footsteps echoing in the street before melting back into the shadows.
