Stories tell of sleepers in deserted or dilapidated houses suddenly feeling a weight on their chests, unable to move. The figure is described as a shadow draped in a rough attus. Some say it vanishes when one cries out; others say that when a light is struck, only its presence lingers. Scholars note similarities to the zashiki-warashi, but unlike those house spirits, the Ainu Kaisei does not grant fortune—rather, it troubles people with oppressive, haunting pressure.
