Detailed Description
Kuzuryū Ōgami of Mount Togakushi is worshipped as a once-violent being transformed through subjugation into a benevolent water deity. The core medieval account tells how the ascetic Gakumon subdued a nine-headed demon and made it a good dragon. Under the name Kuzuryū Gongen, the deity later became a focus of rainmaking rites performed by shrine attendants and Shugendō practitioners.
Tradition says that Kuzuryū likes pears. Worshippers offered the fruit when praying for relief from toothache, and from the early modern period the deity also attracted prayers for relationships and marriage. Images vary with time, presenting a divine figure, a serpent, or a dragon, while the sacred geography remains constant: a sealed rock chamber, springs, and mountain ravines.
Kuzuryū symbolizes the safety of local water sources and the stability of farming. Its former violence is not imagined to have vanished without trace, but to be quieted through remembrance and continued ritual. The Togakushi deity need not be confused with the Black and White Dragon traditions of Echizen, even though they share the work of a water god: regulating rain and river levels and protecting the lives that depend upon them.
