The 20 Wavespells — the 13-day cycle's story

The Wavespell is one cycle of creation, dividing the Tzolk'in into spans of 13 days. In Dreamspell the number 13 is called the "Galactic Tone," and the very flow of the tones filling up from 1 to 13 is seen as a single wave. The wave rises, crests, and quietly recedes — taking that 13-day breath as one unit is the most fundamental way this calendar sees time.

The 260 days of the Tzolk'in are made up of exactly 20 Wavespells. 13 days × 20 = 260 days. Each wave begins led by one of the 20 Solar Seals. The wave of the Red Dragon, the wave of the White Wizard — the seal that stands at the head sets the theme for all 13 days, and the 20 waves join hands in turn to shape a full year's story.

The 13-day passage is read as an arc of creation, "from sowing to completion." Day 1's Magnetic tone asks, "What is my purpose?" — the beginning that sows the seed. Day 2's Lunar tone presents the obstacle and the opposite pole; the midpoint, Day 7's Resonant tone, becomes the central point joining heaven and earth; and toward the end, fruition takes shape. Day 13's Cosmic tone is regarded as the day of completion, transcending power at its fullness, letting go and passing it on to the next wave.

Seen on a larger scale, the 260 days divide into five castles. Four castles — Red (East, birth), White (North, crossing), Blue (West, transformation) and Yellow (South, harvest) — each run for 52 days, with the central Green castle overlaid upon them. One castle consists of four waves; if a wave is a 13-day "week," then a castle is a 52-day "season." The procession of colors maps the workings of the heart across four phases, from first stirring to letting go.

Knowing which Wavespell your KIN belongs to is like knowing the "chapter" of the life you are now living. The leading seal is your theme of inquiry for this period, and your position within the wave shows whether you stand at the prologue of that story, at its climax, or moving toward its end. Some practitioners read this same beat of 13 as a long wave on the scale of a whole life.
