On October 6, 2026, the Yokai Shrine on YOKAI.JP was rebuilt from the ground up. Instead of reading about a shrine page by page, you now step into the cedar forest and visit it yourself: the vermilion torii, the stone fox, the lantern-lit worship hall, the omikuji pavilion with its hundred drawers, and the rack heavy with wishes. Take your time in the evening light.
Meet Suzumaru, your fox guide
As you arrive, Suzumaru the fox comes to greet you. Choose where you'd like to go, whether worship, omikuji or ema, and Suzumaru walks ahead to show you the way. If you'd rather wander on your own, you can skip the guide at any time.
From purification to prayer and fortune
- At the purification basin, scoop water with the ladle and rinse your hands, one step at a time.
- At the worship hall, offer 5, 15 or 50 mon in Yosen, choose one of six wishes (Wish fulfilled, Good relationships, Work, Prosperity, Health or Studies) and ring the bell.
- At the omikuji pavilion, shake the cylinder, a drawer slides open and your fortune for the day arrives. Like a traditional omikuji, it carries a waka poem and its meaning, your luck in wishes, awaited people and more, and a message from a yokai. The fortune itself is written in the original Japanese, with its headings shown in your language. When you've read it, tie it to the rack.
Ema in six materials
Alongside the familiar hinoki wood (free), you can write your wish on amber (30 mon), gold leaf (50 mon), mother-of-pearl (88 mon), or one of two porcelain ema, White Fox and Celadon Moon (100 mon each). Every amber plaque holds a different leaf, flower or tiny insect, and now and then you'll find a rare one. Write in brush, pen or serif lettering, and share your hung ema as an illustrated card.
Browse every material and pattern in the Ema Collection.
In six languages
Suzumaru's guidance, the interface, the omikuji headings and the ema descriptions are available in Japanese, English, Simplified Chinese, Korean, French and Spanish. Switch languages from the settings at the bottom left of the screen.
