Sarugami (Monkey Deity)
Sarugami is a divine monkey spirit or yokai that appears in the form of a monkey. Historically linked to the monkey messengers of Hiyoshi shrines and revered as lords of the mountains, Sarugami later came to be portrayed in medieval tales as harmful to humans. A well-known motif features a great ape demanding female sacrifices; hunters, monks, and notably dogs often play key roles in its defeat. In some regions Sarugami was feared as a possessing spirit.
