Basic Description

The Seven-Fathom Wife is a giant female yokai from eastern Shimane (Izumo), the Oki Islands, and Hōki in Tottori. The term “fathom” (hiro) is a unit of length, and her height—or in some tales her neck—reaches seven hiro. She appears on mountain paths or along the shore, smiling at travelers, throwing stones, or miming laundry to bewilder people. Her look and behavior vary by locale, ranging from a beggar of striking beauty to a fearsome woman with blackened teeth and disheveled hair.

Folklore & Legends

In Ama on the Oki Islands, a mounted man was pelted with stones; when he fought back and slashed at the attacker, the Seven-Fathom Wife fled and turned into a stone, later linked to “Nyōbō-ga Ishi” (Wife’s Stone). Another telling says that after the blow, the head of a stone Buddha fell off. Along the Shimane coast, a long-haired woman with blackened teeth was said to smile at passersby. In Yasugi, a beautiful woman dragged a robe seven fathoms long as she walked. In Hōki, stories describe a pale-faced woman singing about touching rice and red beans, and another tale tells of a seven-fathom-necked woman whose head stretched beneath an old tree.
